Dry itchy skin
Dry, itchy skin is a common pregnancy symptom that usually occurs during your second and third trimesters as the result of your stretching skin and the hormonal changes your body is undergoing. You will most likely notice dry and itchy skin around your stomach and breasts where the skin is stretching most, but it is also very common in your hands and feet. If you incessantly itch all over as if you were coming down with the chicken pox, it may be a sign of a pregnancy complication. We highly recommend contacting your healthcare provider in the event you experience such itchiness.
Eczema and psoriasis, which are usually associated with dry, itchy skin may worsen or improve during your pregnancy. It varies from woman to woman and is the result of your pregnancy hormones. Remember no two pregnancies are identical. This is your unique experience!
How can I relieve my dry, itchy skin?
- Avoid hot showers and baths and use mild, unscented bath products and be sure to rinse them off fully.
- Take a nice, warm oatmeal bath. Oatmeal bath products will be available at your local pharmacy.
- Moisturise daily. Avoid scented moisturisers, natural ones such as cocoa butter work best.
- Rub ice or a cold compress over your itchy areas for temporary relief.
- Avoid going out during the hottest parts of the day as sweating can irritate dry, itchy skin and cause heat rash.
- Wear loose, cool maternity clothing.
