Colic: when to worry
Colic is not usually something to worry about as it will go away over time and there is no evidence that it affects your baby’s health later on in her life. However if you observe any of the following symptoms along with your baby’s colic it is imperative that you contact your pediatrician immediately.
Symptoms that suggest your baby may be suffering from more than just colic:
- Yellow, green or blood tinged vomit
- Being sick more than five times in a day
- Blood tinged or mucousy stool and/or urine
- Abnormal temperature (too high or too low)
- Your baby is lethargic (he flops when you pick him up or development appears to have slowed down)
- Gaining less than 15 g/day
- A seizure or fit
- Skin changes (blue, blotch or very pale)
- Spotty, purplish-red rash
- Trouble breathing
If you notice just one of these symptoms, do not wait to contact your doctor as the colic could in fact be a more serious condition requiring immediate treatment.
